What is Plex?

Plex transcodes videos (using the PC) into a Roku compatible format for streaming to your TV.  Content that could only be viewed on the PC (ie. Flash streams) can now be watched on the Roku.

Many plugins are already enabled on the initial installation of Plex:

  • YouTube
  • Hulu
  • CNN
  • Fox News
Tip

Don’t overlook the ADDITIONAL PLUGINS!  (ie. iMOVIES, Justin.tv plugins)

Additional plugins can be installed directly from the Roku Plex interface.  Under Miscellaneous –> Channel Directory.  Browse the directory for plugins.  Select the channel and install right from the Roku.  Once installed the channel is available in your Plex channel lineup.  Very easy.

Supported plugins found in Plex App Store:

Unsupported plugins (similar to Roku private channels):

TipIn addition to plugins, try myPlex for the ROKU.  PC software NOT REQUIRED.

myPlex connects you with the people and content that you love. Whether you want to watch a movie on the road, remember a cool web video to watch later on the big screen at home, or share those precious home movies with distant relatives, we’ll take care of the technical stuff for you.

How to enable on Roku

Plex vs PlayOn?  Which one is better?

Really depends on what your looking for – local media streaming or web content streaming.  Plex operates very similar to PlayOn.  Both transcode/convert videos using the PC into a Roku playable format

  • Plex is FREE.  PlayOn requires a license/subscription $$$ after the trial
  • Plex is in the ChannelStore.  PlayOn is banished (only available as a private channel).
  • Plex has more features (local media support, myPlex support, better UI)
  • PlayOn appears to have more plugins (Syfy channel) than Plex at the moment.

Can I stream my local media library using Plex?
Yes. Plex fully supports local media playback.
Do I need a PC to install the Plex Media Server?
Yes.  Media server can be downloaded FREE from  http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/
NO.  If your only using myPlex.  What is myPlex?  More info here on setup.
